At 33, the question I want to live with

Today, I turn 33. Alhamdulillah.

My family sent me messages filled with love and prayers. My mother spoke about what it has meant to her to see me show up for our family. My siblings prayed for ease, protection, and goodness for me and my home.

There is something deeply humbling about hearing what your presence has meant to the people closest to you. They have their own memories of your life, including moments you may never have thought to count.

Their words also turn my attention towards everything I have received. My parents cared for me long before I could understand what that care cost. Whatever I have been able to give belongs within a much longer story of being given to. I am grateful to Allah for allowing that care to continue through me.

My father offered a question:

“What have I done with the opportunity of the years Allah has granted me?”

I want to carry that question gently and honestly.

It asks me to look at ordinary things. Whether I listen properly when someone I love is speaking. Whether I make time for my parents. How I respond when I am tired. Whether I ask for forgiveness when I have caused hurt. What my children learn about love from the way I treat them.

So much of a life takes shape in moments that never become milestones. A promise kept. A difficult apology. Time given without watching the clock. These are choices I want to make more carefully.

I still have things I hope to build, learn, and accomplish. I also want to remain present while pursuing them. The people I love are living their lives alongside mine, and the time we have together deserves my attention now.

At 33, I am grateful to be alive, grateful to be loved, and conscious that there is still much for me to learn.

May Allah forgive my shortcomings, keep my intentions sincere, and grant me the wisdom to receive care as readily as I hope to offer it. May He bless my family and put lasting benefit in whatever good He enables me to do.

May I use well what I have been given.
